Anawim’s Old and Gray

Our homeschooling children, together with other home schoolers (from the same home school program) went to visit the elderly in a home care facility. The center is called Anawim Lay Mission Center in Rodriguez (Montalban), Rizal.
Prepping the children about what the activity is all about, I was not prepared to see the elderly there, most of them were abandoned. Some of them were found on the streets. Most had stories to tell and these are not happy stories.
They have no medical life insurance, no retirement benefits and some even have no relatives to speak of.
Much as I want to take pity on them, I still think they are more fortunate staying there than the others who are out there in the streets, shivering in cold, sweating it out during high noon and going through other people’s trash to look for things that can still be salvaged.
Of course, these all depend on how they view the world. There are those who still work hard to earn a living even if they should be slowing down, like Manang Salve here.
I wish we all will take care of our elderly relatives for once upon a time, they were there for us.
