i’m going to miss the more solemn observation of holy week. 🙁 i was around 8 or 9 when we started doing the visita iglesia…and then there’s the pabasa, another tradition carried out by my mom’s side of the family. oh well. i’m suddenly homesick.
Holy Week is not they way it used to be. I remember when I was younger, we observed silence in the house. We weren’t allowed to open the radio and TV during Good Friday. We were allowed to watch other days but TV programs were always about the Passion of Christ.
I guess it’s tough to keep to the strict rules these days… especially the young people. The older generation still make sure rules are followed. I belong to the older generation. duh.
I’ll be spending the Holy week at home with the rest of the family, not in the beaches like many people. For us, the season is meant for reflection and family bonding.
i have to agree with you (comment #2). the oldies in my famly used to be very strict (ie. fanatical) with the observance, as in everything had to be solemn and quiet. not so now. everyone seems to be going to boracay or baguio! 😛
being overseas, we try to observe the season as true as we could. pero mahirap, considering it’s not an official holiday here and people (like my hubby) have to do penitensiya by working on good friday hehe.
Weng, the Holy Week is not as solemn as it used to be. Lots of people in the mall or down at the beach partying. We have the pabasa too, in the province with my papa’s side of the family who are RC. I’m not RC but I’m in an RC marriage and family. 🙂
Rachel, I agree with you about the Holy Week being different. That’s why during this time, the children are usually in the province to participate the traditions there like procession and pabasa with my lola. We don’t even encourage them to join the egg hunting during easter Sunday. Thanks 🙂
ECL, yes its true, during Holy Week, people are partying at the beaches or at the opened malls here. We try to teach the children about the essence of Holy Week. I even join these RC traditions with my family even if I am not RC.
Monaco, we spent Holy Week too just staying at home. We did the Visita Iglesia last Friday and salubong on Easter Sunday. No egg hunting coz I feel it does not jive with the two activities that we did. I hope you had a wonderful Holy Week spent with your family.

Meeya, Holy Week is not as it used to be, yes. That’s why this early on, we try to teach the children about its meaning, hoping they might learn how to do this properly when they are older. Oh, about work, I had work till Thursday 🙂
Carmi, yes, these are life-size representations of the Stations of the Cross. Kinda awesome, seeing these. We traveled 500+ kilometers just to see these during Holy Week three years ago 🙂 Thanks for dropping by 🙂
Oh, that is nice to know, Ellany. We enjoyed this trip though we took that trip three years ago. We didn’t experience the heat then, as you can see in the photo, the sky was overcast.
