What is a Google Reader?

This is the definition of a Google Reader, according to, well, Google:

Once you have registered to get a Google Reader account, you can subscribe to your favorite blogs as well as to your favorite news sites for the latest news. It is a Web-based aggregator that can read Atom and RSS feeds online and offline.

No need to go to your favorite links and news sites one by one to check what’s new. Easy peasy.

  1. It is has a user-friendly interface. First, the subscriber gets to see what’s new to the subscribed sites.
  2. These can be organized according to your preference, either by date or relevance or whiever way the subscriber prefers.
  3. Subscriber can also share items with other web users.
  4. Offline access. Yes. Subscriber uses a browser extension so that online applications can work offline, and up to 2000 items can be downloaded to be read offline.
  5. There is also mobile access.
  6. The Google Reader subscriptions can be integrated with the Google Personalized Page (just like your Yahoo Personalized page where you get to choose the latest news)
  7. For those who use Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Google reader is included there and can redirect users to the Add Subscription screen to be able to add the feed.

There, the different benefits one can have when subscribed to Google Reader.

Oh, and it also has a version specially formatted to the Wii, if you have one.

Plugins? Widgets? Blinkies?

I do not spend 100% of my time online writing posts. I read online publication especially current events and magazines. I read blogs. But there is that thing about SOME blogs that are not very appealing to me.

Why?

There is just way TOO MANY or TOO MUCH (because I can’t count every one) of these things:

  • blinkies
  • plugins
  • widgets
  • awards
  • video
  • audio
  • kilometric blogroll
  • what-have-yous

My suggestion? Read here.

Spam Catcher

Installing a spam catcher on your blog is a great step. Why? It catches spam that would otherwise be caught in your comments section which you have to delete one after the other.

Before a spam catcher was installed, TeacherJulie.com blog had to swim through a lot of spam emails/comments that go through my posts’ comments and select/approve those that are legit comments.

Why is a Spam Catcher important? Continue reading here.

Tagging

Tagging.

A tag is a relevant keyword that is associated with information like a blog entry, video, map and/or photo. Tagging is used to be able to classify keyword-based search of information.

One of the more popular indexing is creating tags to categorize contents according to the key words. More often tag clouds are used to be able to visualize the content in a certain site, specifically that of a personal blog. Tagging makes it easy to have posts found by other people who either made thee posts or found by people looking for these key words. So finding related content is now easier.

Documentation is Important

I am a bit of a disorganized person. Even with a PDA or a mobile phone where I can put down important notes, I tend to write these on papers that seem to get themselves lost.

Why is it important to document everything work-related? Who would want to look for that scrap of paper where a password was written down? Who would want to feel pressure rising up because an all-important step concerning the sequence of something done which is the key to everything work-related was not documented?

There are many ways to document the important developmental steps taken during an experimentation, and/or exploration and/or completion of projects.

Some of the ways documentation can be done are here.
